Our 125hp 1.7-litre diesel Astra Sports Tourer is an enigma when it comes to mpg figures.

Peaks are 49.8mpg and 52.3mpg with troughs of 43.5mpg and 42.6mpg with no significant changes in driving style or routes covered. The result? A fairly underwhelming 46.6mpg average versus a nominal combined official tally of nearly 63mpg.

Meanwhile, one niggle involves the chunky and effective, electrically adjustable/heated door mirrors, which lack a powered folding function. That smacks of penny pinching.
