Peugeot is the latest manufacturer to get its upper medium offering below 130g/km, with the new 1.6-litre 110PS 407 model arriving with a CO2 figure of 129g/km.
That equates to an 18% benefit-in-kind tax band and a combined fuel economy figure of 57.6mpg.
The 1.6-litre engine, already employed in the little brother 308 model, is potent enough for the current trend of diesels built more for economy than speed, and never feels overawed by the large car’s weight.
We tried the new engine in Peugeot’s well-kitted SR ‘business spec’ that includes satnav, 16-inch alloys and Bluetooth for £1000 over the S trim. The kit level is impressive, and the 407 is well-suited to comfortable motorway runs.
The problem comes in the form of a 23.7% predicted residual value, according to Kwik Carcost. That means a 47.6p per mile figure that puts the 407 a few pence adrift of its major rivals.
