Land Rover’s 2016 model-year improvements to its flagship Range Rover include a small efficiency gain for the hybrid model and extra standard equipment.

In the case of the hybrid, driven here, fuel economy improves by 1.5mpg from 44.1mpg. CO2 emissions also fall 5g/km to 164g/km, compared with 182g/km for the non-hybrid model (that is more than £11,000 cheaper) with the same 3.0-litre diesel engine.

The hybrid system can power the Range Rover at up to 30mph and for up to one mile without needing input from the 340hp diesel powerplant. The system recharges via energy recouped under deceleration. Further changes for 2016 have also improved the response of the electric power, including the ability to run as an EV immediately after switching on, as well as in particularly hot conditions.

Land Rover engineers have also worked on the transitions between driving modes. It’s now largely seamless as the car switches between electric and diesel, although there are occasions where a lurch or spike in noise highlights the return to diesel.

For 2016, Land Rover has also added new technologies, including a surround camera system that shows the entire exterior of the vehicle on the media screen to help avoid obstacles.

The automatic tailgate can now be opened by a wave of a foot under the bumper, while an automatic access height feature lowers the vehicle by 35mm to aid entry and exit, plus a further 15mm when the seatbelt is unclipped or the door opened.

The hybrid Range Rover is available in Autobiography, long-wheelbase Autobiography and SVAutobiography trim levels, and all cost more than £100,000. In return, you get a well-equipped, classy and refined vehicle with a hybrid system that reduces urban fuel consumption in particular.
