What’s new: The revised Tiguan now bears “a strong resemblance to its big brother the Touareg”, still offers two front-end options – one biased for on-road driving and another for off-road – along with new technology and improved emissions.

Excellent: Up against anything from a Volvo XC60 to Nissan‘s Qashqai, VW wins on whole-life costs at 56.4 pence per mile (or 54.1ppm for the 2WD equivalent).

Good: Engines have improved emissions, with the entry-level 2WD 2.0-litre TDI 110hp at 139g/km. The best-seller is the 2.0 140hp TDI, as tested, which matches those emissions. Add 4WD ‘4Motion’ and emissions go up to 150g/km CO2.

Average: Spec levels are low with lots of costly options. Still, the low-mid option of four now includes rain and parking sensors, fatigue detection and DAB radio.

Poor: Refinement isn’t as good as you’d expect and, while it’s an overall good bet, it’s lacking excitement.

Verdict: The Tiguan offers good power, handling, steering and economy in an attractive package. There’s no doubt VW’s revised offering will hold its own for many crossover buyers.
