Citroen C4 1.6 HDi semi-auto

Date: 28 June 2006

£16,350

What's new

Citroen has introduced a new semi-automatic paddleshift gearbox on the C4, mated to the 110PS 1.6 HDi diesel engine.

Excellent

It's all about the figures. For a premium of around £500 over the standard manual version, the semi-auto claims a 2.7mpg better mpg at 62.8, while emissions are also slightly improved.

Good

When in auto mode, the driver can temporarily override it with a flick of the paddle, and it returns to automatic after a few seconds. In manual mode, it won't shift up until you decide, even at the red line, which is unusual.

Average

In manual mode, the paddleshift is quick and you can pre-empt the gear change lurch...

Poor

...which occurs every time you change cogs. Lifting off the throttle helps, but the change is difficult to predict in full auto mode. The lurching is a major disappointment and makes the car less relaxing to drive than it needed to be.

Verdict

Good fuel figures, but lack of smoothness makes it difficult to recommend.
