Hyundai Santa Fe 7st 2.2 CRTD CDX auto - One Minute Test

Date: 13 September 2006

Price: £24,587

What's New? Hyundai's all-new Santa Fe is the second generation of the company's big 4x4, and the Koreans have made a big push to take it upmarket.

Excellent The new model is a huge leap forward in every way. The classy looks combine well with a better quality interior to create an atmosphere that's an improvement over previous budget offerings.

Good The optional (£600) third row of seats folds neatly to make a decent storage area, and standard equipment is good. Anti-skid control, cruise and leather are standard.

Average It's fair to put the new Santa Fe up against more established seven-seat rivals such as the Mitsubishi Shogun or Nissan Pathfinder, and its costs of 42.6p per mile are competitive on this level.

Poor The hefty P11D is still a little tough to swallow for what is still considered to be a budget brand, and the driving dynamics aren't up with the best off-roaders.

Verdict Possibly the most impressive car yet out of Korea, but that doesn't necessarily put it ahead of the Europeans.
