Nissan Navara King Cab - One Minute Test

Date: 26 August 2006

What's new: Nissan's excellent new pick-up is available in four-seat King Cab form as well as double cab, which means a 350mm longer loadbay, but the same amount taken out of the cabin.

Excellent:

It's never going to match the ride and refinement of a 4x4, but living with a pick-up has never been easier, for drive or for equipment.

Good: The 174PS 3.0-litre diesel shows Toyota why it should have put a more powerful engine in the Hi-Lux.

Average: The two rear seats aren't suitable for long runs, though the cushions fold up to create more cabin load space. The rear doors are back-hinged to make cabin access easier.

Poor: The brakes don't feel like they're completely confident about bringing the Navara to a halt quickly enough, even when it's unladen. With a tonne's worth of load, they could struggle.

Verdict: The Navara is currently vying with Mitsubishi's new L200 for top pick-up status, and they're both well clear of the rest.
