Saab 9-3 2.8t V6 Aero - One Minute Test

Date: 28 August 2006

Price: £33,886

What's new: Saab has fitted the turbocharged 2.8-litre 253PS engine to its convertible 9-3, following on from the saloon and Sportwagon versions that got the range-topper last year.

Excellent: The big engine works well in the 9-3, especially with the auto gearbox which eliminates most of the manual 2.8's traction problems.

Good: Despite the power, it's more of an effortless continental cruiser than hardcore performance car. Big distances at pace is what this car's about. Styling is also aging well.

Average: As with all 9-3s, some of the cabin switch-gear feels a touch cheap, space is typical cabrio, so boot and rear seats are limited.

Poor: As you'd expect of such a big engine, economy (28.2mpg) and emissions (266g/km and the maximum 35% tax bracket) are a touch prohibitive for company car drivers

Verdict: A gifted mile-muncher, but with high costs and some very good rivals.
