What's new Seat has put the 200PS Volkswagen Golf GTI engine into the Leon hatch and badged it FR - meaning it's a warm, but not hot, hatchback. The hot Cupra will have a 240PS engine.

Excellent Here's a car that will do pretty much everything well, but it is particularly quick (0-62mph in 7.3sec), good looking and practical, so it's got tonnes of user-chooser appeal.

Good The FR isn't quite as much fun to drive on the twisty stuff as the Ford Focus ST, but it's close. The kit you get for the cash is impressive, too, and includes cruise control, MP3 connection, anti-skid control and climate control.

Average The dashboard layout isn't that attractive or sporty and where Seat has tried to be so with the steering wheel and gear lever, designers have gone too far and sacrificed comfort.

Poor Only the steering on the vehicle is a letdown - it is too light and doesn't offer enough feedback.

Verdict The Seat Leon FR appeals to the driver for both fun and practicality and to the business car manager for both value and practicality.
