Subaru Legacy: One Minute Test

What's new: Subaru has carried out a subtle mid-life facelift on its Legacy, also introducing an innovative fuel-saving system called SI-Drive which effectively offers three engine settings. We drove the Sports Tourer 3.0R spec.B.
Excellent: There aren't many large four-wheel drive estates that offer power of nearly 250PS and handle like something considerably more sporty. Even less can do it for under £30,000 (£29,240).
Good: The SI-Drive works well. It has three easily discernable settings: Intelligent, which softens throttle response for town driving to save fuel; Sport, an everyday compromise between performance and economy; and Sport Sharp for maximum performance.
Average: The interior doesn't feel as special as less rapid but more premium rivals.
Poor: The costs are the Spec-B's biggest problem. At 56.2 pence per mile, the range-topping Legacy is an expensive machine to run, with a combined economy figure of just 23.0mpg and CO2 of 290g/km not helping.
Verdict: A vastly underrated option, if you can afford it.
