The start point for the best source of fleet information

Volvo V50 D5 Sport

Date: 12 July 2006

£24,367

What's new

Volvo's new 2.4-litre 180PS diesel makes its way into the small V50 estate, having already been slotted into the S60, V70, XC90 and new S80. Volvo says its pitching at downsizers wanting a smaller car but big engine.

Excellent

The Sport pack gives the V50 a purposeful look, and the Volvo badge has credibility.

Good

All Volvo's usual rules apply. It's comfortable, the cabin quality's good and everything is well laid out. It would be an easy car to live with.

Average

The Geartronic auto 'box saps power - the V50 didn't feel as quick as the bigger and heavier manual S60 fitted with the same engine. The V50's also far from cheap.

Poor

There's deceptively little rear and boot space, while our car also suffered from a worrying gearbox clunk.

Verdict

Expensive, but few rivals competently combine small estate and big diesel. A few downsizers will find it attractive.
