Audi A4: Test Drive

Sometimes it's good to be wrong. Having initially dismissed the new Audi A4's styling as too same-again, it's refreshing to find that on the road it's a different and better looking car than its predecessor.

The pictures released last month really didn't do it justice, because in the metal the slimmer, intricately detailed headlights make it look similar to the TT from some angles, while the more angled bootlid means it looks like its A5 coupe sibling from behind (great for new A4 buyers, maybe not such great news for A5 owners).

Inside, the A4 has adopted Audi's MMI system that controls everything from the ventilation and stereo to the optional satnav. It's easily the best system of its kind even if the rotating knob moves anti-clockwise, which is the counter-intuitive direction.

The new car is 117mm longer and 54mm wider, creating cabin and boot space that Audi claims beats both its BMW 3-series arch-rival and the new Mercedes C-class. Two six-foot adults can just about sit one behind the other while the 480-litre boot - up 20 litres - is plenty big enough. The rear seats fold at the touch of a button, though not quite flat as their cushions don't flip forward.

The rest of the interior is decent quality, although some of the interior plastics appear cheaper than they have been on previous models. Be aware, too, that some colour and trim finishes look better than others. It's a problem that applies to the exterior because weaker shades such as light blue can seem a little washed out.
