Audi A6 Allroad: Test Drive

Date: 05 June 2007   |   Author: Tristan Young

Category: Off-roader
Prices: £33,672 - £47,617
Key Rival: Volvo XC70

What's new: Almost exactly a year after the latest A6 Allroad was launched, Audi has added a range-topping 4.2-litre V8 FSI engine to the line-up.

Excellent: If you're after a relatively low-profile but high-luxury vehicle capable of dragging a horse-box across a showground, this is it. Oodles of refinement, plenty of towing power from the new 360PS V8 and a rarity value, too.

Good: Given the power (see 'Excellent') and performance (0-62mph in 7.8 seconds) a combined mpg figure of 25.2 is an entirely decent figure.

Average: Don't expect it to follow Range Rovers off-road. However, the Allroad with slow to respond, but clever, air-suspension will easily cope with muddy tracks and grassy fields.

Poor: In a car of this class, seamless gear changes are expected from the auto. Unfortunately, there are a few too many jolts, both on up and down changes.

Verdict: If you don't want to stand out as a 4x4 owner, but need a basic capability, there's nothing else with the class.
