Audi S5: Test Drive

Date: 30 July 2007   |   Author: John Mahoney

Audi S5
Category: Coupe
Prices: £32,400-£39,850
Key Rival: BMW 3-series Coupe

We've already tried the range-topping 3.0-litre diesel and declared the svelte coupe is set for success.

This time we're throwing business sensibilities in the back seat and getting behind the wheel of the mighty 354PS V8 flagship.

If only all engines could feel like the 4.2-litre petrol lurking within the S5's snout. Power everywhere in the rev range is accompanied by an intoxicating, and politically incorrect V8 soundtrack. Performance is blistering - 0-62mph takes just 5.1secs. The penalty is predictably paid at the pumps with a poor 22.8mpg average. And bear in mind that those not taking the cash will also have to stomach a maximum BIK tax bill too.

Handling, like the diesel, is safe and secure thanks to permanent 4x4, but it's not as entertaining, nor as adjustable as the BMW 335i that's £5k cheaper and barely any slower. But the Audi's sumptuous, well-built cabin feels it's worth the £40,425 P11D price tag, and although carrying four will be a bit of a squeeze, the lengthy proportions were sacrificed for looks not cabin space - how refreshing.

Verdict: The diesel is a better bet, but misses out on S5's fab V8
