BMW 335d Coupe: Test Drive

Date: 09 August 2007   |   Author: Tristan Young

Category: Coupe
Price: £35,640
Key Rival: Audi A5

Even with tighter environmental taxes and laws there will always be a demand for fast BMWs.

These days, having a diesel-only policy is no barrier to owning a rapid Beemer, and sitting at the top of the diesel side of the German brand's 3-series Coupe range is a new 335d powered by a twin-turbo 3.0-litre engine and costing 47.4ppm.

For the SE trim auto a heady 282PS is on tap, which equates to a 6.1-second 0-62mph time and a top speed limited to 155mph. And as you'd expect the car's not only a quick drive, but also refined, luxurious and entertaining.

As it's a diesel, it will still return 37.7mpg. The compromise comes with the CO2 output that, at 200g/km, means a 335d driver will be in the 30% benefit-in-kind tax band, still better than the petrol 335i coupe but not low cost. But then desirability usually comes with a price.

Verdict: A diesel BMW that's supremely quick, but owning a car this desirable comes at a price
