The start point for the best source of fleet information

BMW 635d coupe: Test Drive

Date: 08 November 2007

635d
Category: Sports
Prices: £53,685-£87,365
Key Rival: Mercedes CLS

The revised 6-series, fitted with the 286PS 3.0-litre straight six twin-turbo diesel for the first time, is yet more having your cake and eating it from BMW.

Adding a diesel gives the 6-series far greater appeal to top-ranking employees, particularly those on cash-for-car schemes that will be paying their own fuel bills.

We've stated before that the twin-turbo diesel is one of the finest engines available, offering plenty of power while in the 6-series also returning more than 40mpg. This results in a distance between fill-ups of well over 400 miles.

Another advantage is that at 183g/km any London drivers will avoid the new proposed upper £25 a day gas-guzzler tax due next year.

Revisions to the rest of the car are subtle, with some minor styling changes to the front and rear bumpers as well as the interior, plus a few improvements to equipment levels.

Costs are still high with a P11D value of £55,895 for the Sport version and a 68.5p cost per mile, but you're getting a luxury grand tourer that will happily take two and their luggage to the south of France at a moment's notice in total comfort and quickly.

Verdict: The costs might still be on the high side but finally the BMW 6-series begins to make some sense to the business car market
