The start point for the best source of fleet information

BMW X3 2.0d SE: First Drive

Date: 26 February 2007   |   Author: Tristan Young

Price: £28,327
Category: small 4x4
Key Rival: Land Rover Freelander

The most popular engine in BMW's facelifted X3 range is predicted to be the 2.0 diesel. And on paper it's clear to see why. An amazing 39.2mpg is claimed for the combined fuel figure, according to Topcalc.co.uk it costs just 39.1p a mile to run, and it's relatively swift with a 0-62mph time of 10.3secs.

Having driven many other BMWs with the 2.0d engine we would also expect this X3 to be a winner. However, this isn't the exact same 2.0d you find in other BMWs.

In the X3 the engine has been tweaked to suit the characteristics of an off-roader. So you only get 150PS rather than the standard 163PS. But the lack of power isn't an issue: the problem is the engine noise and vibration levels. They are just not up to BMW's usually magnificent levels, so we'd have to recommend buyers opt for the larger diesel or go petrol.
