As trilogies go the arrival of the C-crosser is unlikely to be a box office smash.

It's not that Citroen's first ever attempt at an off-roader is poorly directed, it isn't.

The well-packaged seven-seater doesn't even lose the plot when trading muddy fields for roads. It's just there's the nagging feeling we've been here and seen it all before that ruins the show and, of course, we have.

The C-crosser is the second French off-roader spun off from the Mitsubishi Outlander. Like the Peugeot 4007 it's undergone a mild aesthetic tweak and an engine transplant. Instead of the raucous and wheezy diesel 140PS 2.0 there's a more muscular 160PS 2.2. To confuse matters, Mitsubishi will soon offer the same engine in its line-up (the 160PS lump also inhabits the Land Rover Freelander's engine bay).

An auto is rumoured to be under development but for now we get the slick.
