Citroen C6 2.2 HDI Exclusive: Test Drive

Date: 21 November 2007   |   Author: Tristan Young

Citroen C6
Category: Executive
Prices: £28,315-£38,195
Key rival: BMW 5-series

Citroen should be praised for producing the C6 - it is a striking car which generates far more comments from passers-by than supposedly far more prestigious vehicles.

But ask someone if they'd buy one and most say no. Citroen never promised big sales, but this hasn't stopped huge depreciation.

Our test car, with the newly installed 173PS 2.2-litre, was predicted by Topcalc to lose £22,456 of the £34,479 P11D price after three years and 60,000 miles. The result was a crippling 51.0ppm running cost. A BMW 530d in top spec M Sport trim costs 45.4ppm.

The new diesel is the 'sensible' business choice if you're one of the exclusive few ordering a C6 and it's a fine engine with plenty of power.

Unfortunately our test car suffered a serious fault that shook our confidence in the C6's apparently high level of craftsmanship.

If you bought one, people would admire your choice - they just wouldn't envy it.

Verdict: A heart, not a head, choice that doesn't fit in the harsh business world where cost is king
