Ford Mondeo saloon: Test Drive

Date: 15 May 2007   |   Author:

Category: Upper medium
Prices: £14,995-£24,195
Key Rival: Vauxhall Vectra

The saloon is something of a poor man in the Mondeo range. In the last generation car it accounted for just 4% of sales in the UK, despite saloon-only rivals such as the VW Passat or Peugeot 407 performing strongly.

Available with the same choice of engines and trims as the five-door and estate, the saloon is generally fractionally more expensive to run than the five-door thanks to residual values a couple of hundred pounds lower despite the identical list price.

The saloon gets an extra 66mm of length compared with its five-door sibling, all of which is in the rear overhang, liberating a little more luggage space. The slightly more upright styling also gives rear-seat passengers more headroom, although space isn't a particular concern in the hatchback.

Don't expect to see too many saloons around, but the styling is a touch more favourable than the five-door.
