Well, hold off the lethal injection just for now because by the first corner you realise something bordering on profound - the old-timer near as dammit out-drives most of the competition.
The Sportka has much to teach the young class of whippersnappers with its well weighted, precise, feelsome steering - something few rivals can boast. What the 95PS 1.6-litre engine lacks in punch and refinement, the Sportka makes up in the bends. Grip levels are high and despite being on the firm side the ride is also good, although it does allow for a little more body movement than we remembered.
The Ford is fun with a capital 'F', a joy to drive and one that won't cost companies an excessive premium. Running costs slip under 25ppm, although the Sportka only averages 37mpg on the combined cycle and pollutes to the tune of 182g/km attracting a high 23% BIK tax bill. Short gearing will also make m-way work a little more frantic. Our car occasionally creaked and groaned, too - think of it as added character - but the plucky Ford's not ready for the nursing home just yet.
