Honda Accord Sport GT: Test Drive

Date: 20 August 2007   |   Author: Tristan Young

Category: Upper medium
Prices: £20,767-£22,367
Key Rival: Audi A4

Honda's user-chooser offering in the upper medium sector has been narrow, particularly, if like the majority of people, you want the diesel that comes in only two trim levels.

But all that's now changed. Responding to customer demand and competition from rival makers, the Japanese brand has added a new entry-level SE (which can only be ordered as a diesel saloon) and a range-topping Sport GT.

Available as a saloon or estate, the GT answers customers pleas for a sportier looking Accord - and more specifically something to rival the Audi A4 in S-line trim.

Unlike the Audi, Honda has not only changed the specification and external look of the car, but also added a sports suspension - a cost extra on the Audi. The suspension, which has been stiffened to improve steering feel and reduce body roll, works perfectly, without ruining the car's comfort levels one bit.

For £20,767 (or £22,367 for the estate) Honda supplies a car loaded with goodies. Standard equipment includes subtleties such as dark chrome door handles and front grille, plus smoked headlights, and more obvious kit such as front fog lights, rear boot spoiler, 17-inch alloys, red illuminated dials, voice-activated satnav, six-CD autochanger, Bluetooth and cruise control.

The Accord may only have a year-or-so left in its current form before an all-new model is due, but the Sport GT bring it bang up-to-date and makes it a strong rival to the Audi A4 or VW Passat, even though the already excellent 140PS 2.2-litre diesel engine remains unchanged.
