The start point for the best source of fleet information

Honda Civic Type S GT 1.8: First Drive

Date: 12 March 2007   |   Author: Tristan Young

Honda Civic
Category: Lower medium
Prices: £13,030-£17,550
Key Rival: VW Golf

When we first drove the Civic Type S (the sporty three-door version of the Civic) we were impressed, but less enamoured with the fact Honda was bothering with a three-door car when the five-door looks so good.

Now we've driven the petrol version (we first tested the diesel) we better understand the need for a three-door - apparently some buyers just won't touch a five-door car, no matter how well hidden the rear doors are or how good looking it is. However, we were disappointed with how the petrol version drove.

The 1.8 engine needs to be worked especially hard before a driver is rewarded with a decent turn of speed, and the gear-change and clutch seemed at odds with each other, making smooth changes difficult. Despite this Honda has produced a costs winner. In high spec GT trim the Civic Type S still comes in at 25.7ppm, which is nearly 4ppm cheaper than the equivalent VW Golf or Vauxhall Astra.

Verdict: A low cost car, but stick with the diesel
