Jaguar XJ: Test Drive

Date: 10 May 2007   |   Author:

Category: Luxury
Prices: £43,540-£60,150
Key Rival: Mercedes-Benz S-class

The current XJ has always been highly rated, but the overly retro styling has come in for its share of criticism, something the grand Brit brand has sought to rectify with the refreshed version of the luxury saloon.

More noticeable than many mid-life facelifts, the new XJ is an improvement over its predecessor, thanks to a more muscular, sporty and pronounced front end. Other changes you're less likely to spot include a new 'power vent' in the front wheelarch, new rear bumper and spoiler, redesigned wing mirrors that lower wind noise and, importantly, new front seats.

Perversely, the biggest advantage to the new front seats comes to those sat in the rear. The redesigned seat back means more leg room, and there's now space to slide feet under the front seats. It makes a real difference in an area the XJ had previously struggled compared with its esteemed rivals - the BMW 7-series, Audi A8 and Mercedes-Benz S-class. The new seats are also heated as standard now, with cooled seats an option. There's a long-wheelbase version, too, offering an extra 125mm of rear legroom for an extra £1750.
