Lexus LS600h: Test Drive

Date: 12 July 2007

LS600h - rear seats
Category: Luxury
Prices: £82,000-£88,000
Key rival: Mercedes-Benz S-class

The ultimate expression of the Lexus brand - that's how the Japanese company describes its new flagship model, the LS600h.

That 'h' stands for hybrid, with the LS luxury saloon becoming the third Lexus to get a petrol-electric powertrain.

We tried it in the range-topping long-wheelbase form complete with the rear seat relaxation pack, a must-have for all high-flying execs and top limo companies. For around £3000 over the long-wheelbase's £85,000 estimated list price, it adds business class-style aircraft seats complete with shiatsu massage function. There's also an extra 12cm of legroom on offer in the back over the standard wheelbase car. However, the boot pays the penalty for the electric power - the batteries, which recharge during deceleration, take some of the space, leaving just 330 litres. Rival cars hover around the 500-litre mark.

Lexus reckons up to 80% of LS600h orders will be for the long-wheelbase car, with getting on for half that figure speccing the sumptuous relaxation pack that does away with a third rear seat.
