Category: Supermini
Prices: £8500-£11,000
Key rival: Vauxhall Corsa

Mazda is getting serious about superminis. Its old 2, with its MPV-like styling, was almost an irrelevance compared with a host of modern rivals that were more appealing to a younger audience. But that's about to change with the all-new 2.

Arriving in the UK this September, it's now a genuine threat to the established Vauxhall Corsa, Ford Fiesta, Peugeot 207 and Renault Clio-led crowd. The styling has a European audience in mind, while the car is also lighter. It's a little smaller, too, which accounts for a fifth of the weight reduction, but 60% is down to engineering new lighter parts.

At launch there will be a choice of two 1.3 petrol engines with 75 and 86PS outputs, as well as a 103PS 1.5. A 1.4-litre diesel, part of Mazda parent Ford's co-operation with PSA Peugeot-Citroen, will follow six months after launch at the same time as a three-door variant.
