In a world where cars are getting bigger and heavier with every model replacement, it's good to see that someone has headed in the other direction.

Cutting weight means better economy and emissions, and that's what Mazda has achieved with its new Vauxhall Corsa rival, the 2.

It certainly looks a whole load better than the boxy model it replaces, and that style is the primary reason behind Mazda's predictions that it will sell three times as many of the new one - around 12,000 next year.

The launch line-up is made up of three petrol engines, 75 and 86PS versions of the 1.3-litre engine and a 103PS 1.5. A 68PS 1.4 diesel follows at the end of the year, but it's too weedy and should only be considered if you want to cover massive mileage slowly and cheaply.

The 1.5 is the engine of choice. It's quick enough when hustled, and combines well with a chassis that's fun on a twisty B-road, without being too harsh over bumps and potholes. The 1.5-litre engine also falls into the lowest 15% BIK banding thanks to CO2 of 140g/km.

Mazda has come over all generous with the standard equipment on the sub-£12,000 Sport model, with cruise control, climate control and alloys among a decent amount of standard equipment.

The costs are also pretty impressive, with the 22.5p per mile beating the equivalent Peugeot 207, Renault Clio or Ford Fiesta, and only 0.5ppm behind Vauxhall's Corsa.

Finally, the interior's spacious enough for four adults in reasonable comfort, and cabin materials are plenty good enough in this price range.

Mazda has come from nowhere to be as competitive as any manufacturer in this segment. The new 2 has styling appeal - especially in body-kitted Sport trim - quality appeal, driver appeal and best of all, it makes sense to the wallet.
