Mercedes is gunning for the corporate market with this 'fleet special' model.
Powered by the 170PS 2.1 diesel, the Executive trim is, at £29,870, priced £677 below the Classic specification on which it's based, but with £2543 of extra standard kit.
Business car driver-orientated additional features include hands-free telephone pre-wiring, six-disc CD changer and 16-inch alloys exclusive to the Executive trim model.
The 2.1 diesel is easily adequate if not particularly quick bearing in mind the big, heavy car, though CO2 of 177g/km with the optional auto gearbox isn't offensive for company car drivers, while a claimed combined fuel economy of 42.1mpg won't break the wallet.
Though this is probably the pick of the E-class range from a corporate sensibility point of view, unfortunately rivals from BMW and Audi both easily beat the Merc's 43.9 pence per mile figure for the auto. But if you fancy an E-class, and it's more than understandable given that it's certainly the most comfortable cruiser of the three, this could be the one to go for.
Verdict: A quality piece of kit and good spec given the sub-£30,000 price tag. Go for the more expensive models if you can afford it, but the Executive trim is great news for business drivers
