Mercedes C200k Elegance: Test Drive

What's new: Mercedes is right back in the game with the new C-class. We tried the entry-level petrol C200 with the Merc-essential auto gearbox.
Excellent: The new saloon is a massive step up from the old one, with refinement and driving dynamics both leaping forward. The 184PS engine's also plenty powerful enough, even if the noise isn't dramatic.
Good: Practicality isn't left behind, especially in the large boot, and the interior generally feels reassuring expensive and well put together, if a little dominated by black. And you only pay an extra 2.5ppm for the £1095 auto gearbox.
Average: In Elegance trim, the C-class isn't much of a styling evolution from the last car, and can look ungainly in places.
Poor: The C-class is still expensive, with a high 39.7ppm compared with rivals. Our car didn't feel over-specced despite the £5000 worth of options (and that's without satnav).
Verdict: A very satisfying car to live with, but you pay for the benefits over prestige opposition.
