The start point for the best source of fleet information

Mercedes R280CDi: First Drive

Date: 19 February 2007

Prices: £39,050
Category: MPV
Key Rival: Volvo XC90

For the well-healed country set, the R-class comes close to being nigh on perfect. It offers hauling ability for six with all-wheel drive traction to help tackle the odd point-to-point off-road excursion and the obligatory month wintering in the Alps.

But for business it'll cost, with a 53ppm and a combined 30.4mpg for the shortened entry R280 CDi (£36,100). That short-wheelbase version will be too short for most, too, with restricted legroom in the third row, while the long-wheelbase is only available with the more powerful R320CDi that adds £4400 to the P11D - and that's before you've seen the option list.

Otherwise, the R-class is a pleasant, relaxing place to smother away the miles, apart from the persistent fly-in-the-ointment - the seven-speed auto that occasionally thumps through the gears with little flair.

Verdict: Perfect compromise for select few, but SWB compromises space for most. Big on costs, too
