Mitsubishi Outlander: Test Drive

Date: 18 June 2007   |   Author: Tristan Young

Category: Small 4x4
Price: £19,466-£24,766
Key Rival: Hyundai Santa Fe

It was only launched a few months ago but Mitshubishi's Outlander will gain a new 2.2-litre diesel engine later in the year. Why so soon? The reason is two-fold.

Firstly Mitsubishi has just done a deal with Peugeot-Citroen to use the Outlander's underpinnings for the upcoming Peugeot 4007 and Citroen C-crosser. The deal gives Peugeot-Citroen seven-seat off-roaders and in return Mitsubishi gains a new diesel.

The second reason for gaining a new engine is that the original one, which will continue to be sold, is the weakest part of the new car.

The Outlander is a practical and not over-large seven-seat 4x4 with reasonable costs, but the current 140PS 2.0-litre diesel bought in from VW is noisey, has a narrow powerband and seems at odds with the rest of the car. Which is odd, because in VW Group product this is not the engine's normal character.

Verdict Wait for the new diesel engine - this will probably give the Outlander another star.
