Nissan Pathfinder 2.5 dCi Adventura: Test Drive

Date: 06 December 2007   |   Author:

Category: Large 4x4
Prices: £23,045-£29,945
Key rival: Toyota Land Cruiser

Nissan has revised its butch Pathfinder off-roader, but don't worry, it hasn't gone soft. The full-sized 4x4 receives Bluetooth across the range, redesigned alloy wheels, hill assist on manual models and puddle lamps to highlight how many feet of water you're parked in.

As always the drive leaves a lot to be desired if you're familiar with talented off-road-biased tarmac lovers like the X-trail, but how many of those can pull 2.8 tonnes, have a low ratio gearbox, boast American truck-style looks and have an air conditioner that could cool a small African town?

In the past we have given the tax-dodging Navara the nod as the best-driving pick-up, but its Pathfinder sibling's more car-like arrangement means it has a better, grippier drive. Sadly the rolling wooden ride remains and it still costs a whopping 45.5p a mile to run in this £28,645 Adventura trim.

Verdict: Tough workhorse shines in the rough, though running costs aren't low
