No, our art editor hasn't cocked up; the car pictured is in fact the second-generation X-trail 4x4 and not its 2001 predecessor.

Believe it or not, the new X-trail is completely new from the ground up. Based around underpinnings donated by the recent Focus competitor, the Qashqai, the new X-trail remains one of fleet's friendliest 4x4s.

Quality inside is up to Qashqai levels, with liberal use of expensive-feeling plastics, while the quirky, little-loved centrally located speedo is ditched to make room for satnav and a conventional layout.

Front cabin space is generous, light and airy, but don't be tempted to opt for the large sunroof because it robs the rear of valuable headroom.
