Vauxhall Corsa

Vauxhall's supermini hasn't been with us long but we're already finding it's good when it comes to consuming fuel.

Two weeks since we introduced our Corsa and we’ve already shaved a penny off our ‘actual’ running costs. Thank improving fuel consumption, now standing at a fine 38mpg.

Initial Report

'Fit for purpose' is a dull phrase that conjures up civil servants and their sensible shoes, crew cut hair and cheap suits, yet it can be applied in an automotive sense.

Take, for example, the latest addition to our fleet, the excellent new Corsa. It was the winner of our supermini Best In Class costs analysis (8 November 2006 issue) and I knew it to be an all-round champ from previous experience. Perfect for us.

Picking the engine was easy. On launch the peppy 80PS 1.2-litre was most fun, revving with more enthusiasm than the larger 1.4. And on paper the 48.7mpg combined economy promises a minute thirst while overall running costs slip comfortably below 20ppm.

Specifying our Corsa wasn't quite as easy. We had grand plans of ordering the cheapest car with the simplest spec, but the 1.2 isn't available in the base Expression trim. Then instead of picking the next trim up, Life, we plumped for a Club because we're pessimists and it comes with added side and curtain airbags [1]. Then, to our horror, we realised aircon wasn't standard Club kit. Luckily, when our pale metallic Corsa scrunched up in the car park it was in fact the Club a/c model which is £500 more than the regular Club model [2].

For the first 1000 miles we are going to take it easy, restricting revs to 4000rpm [3], which sounds excruciating, but isn't - in top gear 4000rpm means a licence-endorsing 90mph-plus.

Living in London I'm appreciating its diminutive proportions, supple ride and light and airy cabin, that not only pulls off being stylish, but is easy to use too and even has an admirable stab at big car quality [4]. It's early days but I think the Corsa and I are going to get on fine despite being 'fit for purpose'.
