It's about to get quite crowded in the small 4x4 segment. There have already been four new seven-seat entrants this year, as well as the five-seat Vauxhall Antara. And that's not to mention Ford and Renault off-roaders coming in the next 12 months.

So Peugeot's 4007 has a bit of work to do to carve itself a niche. Especially as it has two very close relations also fighting for sales: Citroen's new C-crosser and the Mitsubishi Outlander - an arrangement sees the French duo built at Mitsubishi's Japanese factory.

It'll help that Peugeot is looking for small volume, constrained mainly by supply but also by the brand's conservatism in entering a sector for the first time. That's why it's only reckoning on a "few hundred" this year and 2000 the following 12 months.

While beauty is in the eye of the beholder, it's difficult to argue that the Peugeot is among the prettier off-roaders, with that gaping corporate grille struggling to migrate to the bigger nose of an off-roader. It is, though, one of the few distinguishing features, with everything from the bonnet backwards shared with the Mitsubishi and Citroen, save the chrome strip across the tailgate and the Peugeot badge on the steering wheel.
