Renault Laguna: Test Drive

The Laguna estate, or Sport Tourer to give it the proper name, is an important model in the Laguna range.

While the likes of Ford might expect Mondeo estates to account for around one-fifth of sales, with the Laguna the load-lugger accounts for nearer 40% of units.

The age of the average buyer, around the early 40s, is also about a decade younger than the traditional hatch buyer, which means Renault roping in drivers earlier with the hope of retaining them when they come to the end of a three-year lease deal. The price gap from hatch to estate is £950.

This is the Laguna III, and Renault aims to right all the self-confessed wrongs of the Laguna II, where warranty claims went through the roof thanks to quality issues. Not this time, the French brand promises, and grabbing a seat in the cabin illustrates how much it's possible for the firm's interiors to improve. Material quality is good and the layout is user-friendly, with the exception of the non-intuitive optional satnav controls, and seating that some struggle to set to a completely comfy position, especially with the electric seats that are available on higher spec models.
