Seat Altea XL: Test Drive

Date: 04 June 2007   |   Author:

Category: Mini-MPV
Prices: £12,995-£18,045
Key Rival: Peugeot 307 Estate

That'd be three mini-MPVs spun off the new Seat Leon now then! The standard Altea and the Toledo obviously weren't enough for the Spanish brand, because it's now added the Altea XL.

The styling is slightly less sporting than the base Altea thanks to the extra weight around the rear end, and the XL is 1870mm longer and offers 123 litres more boot space at 532 litres. All of which means the car makes sense - with Seat pitching it against cars such as the Focus Estate - until you remember there's also the Toledo. If the XL is a longer Altea, then where does the Toledo, basically also an Altea with a bigger rear end, fit?

The XL is only £300-£400 more than the normal Altea, which means 0.4ppm for this £14,847 1.9 TDi Stylance model at 28.9p.

Verdict: Class-leading boot and above-average drive.
