By now you probably think you've got the Scout gist. Raise the ride height, throw in some 4x4 hardware and dial the anti-skid control to 'mud'. A dirt-cheap small 4x4 to take the battle to the cheeky Panda 4x4 and tough new Terios, right? Wrong.

After all that stressing and demonstrating of how the Octavia Scout is a model in its own right, the new Roomster Scout fires a shot over its own bow. It, you see, is just an extra trim level, and does not conceal a 4x4 drivetrain under the new plastic skirt (the Octavia Scout does), nor even a tricky limited slip differential.

So, despite a jacked-up ride height of a very marginal 17mm over the Roomster, and some toughened protective plastic cladding, the Roomster Scout is little more than a 4x4 fraud.
