From outside few will notice the lowered suspension, extra chrome bits splattered on the bumpers and grille, nor will they even clock the subtle badges on the updated model. But when they get inside and drive they will notice the aerodynamic tweaks under the body and under the bonnet. The 105PS 1.9-litre diesel has been re-mapped with economy in mind, too, and had its idling speed wound down. Gearing has also been stretched, with a longer third, fourth and fifth. The result? A 136g/km and 55.4mpg on the combined average, down 12g/km and 5mpg.

It's a worthy improvement, but as it's a diesel drivers will still pay 18% BIK, which includes the Government's 3% surcharge levied on diesel cars.

On the road the Passat drives like a Passat. Only a knobblier ride and increased road noise, both due to the differing suspension and energy-saving tyres' stiffer sidewalls, betray the changes. The longer gears blunt acceleration a little, but plentiful torque compensates.

The way to look at the VW is as a way of instantly reducing a fleet's theoretical carbon footprint by over 8%, while reducing your fuel bill by 10%. Only then does the expected £1000 hike over the regular model begin to make some business sense.
