Writing the words 'desirable' and 'Volvo' in the same sentence is not something I ever expected to do in this job, but here goes.

The new Volvo C30 is one of the most desirable hatches on the block. Even if it drove with the finesse of an ageing shopping trolley, had the interior of a Moroccan boudoir and drank like Oliver Reed at Christmas, I'd bet people would still be lining up to have the C30 as their next company steed.

In Apple Mac white, especially, it looks great, and as revealed in our premium hatchback cost-per-mile head-to-head in BusinessCar 7 Feb, it loses little of its appeal to business when the numbers are crunched, narrowly losing out to VW's Golf.

However, it does not have the space of a conventional hatch and there's room for only four. And the boot space beneath the delectable glass tailgate is at a premium - forget about lugging that occasional Chesterfield.

Inside is a pleasant place to be, although despite what they will tell you, the 'floating console' is more a novelty than practical addition.

On the road, despite tidy accurate handling donated by the fantastic Focus, it feels a little wooden in the ride department, and has numb steering feel.

We concentrated on the 136PS 2.0-litre diesel, which isn't quite as sweet as the peppy 1.6, but compensates with usefully more power. It also averages a reasonable 49.6mpg and slots into the reasonable 20% tax band. Factor in a sub-29ppm class-best RVs and you begin to see why even businesses in the cold light of day might find the C30 more than a little attractive.

A cost-effective, stylish Volvo that's a good all-rounder to boot? I think I may have to have a lie down.
