In isolation, Volvo's V70 - powered by the firm's 163PS 2.4-litre diesel - looks like a steal.

Even when picked with an automatic gearbox (the combination of choice) the P11D value comes in well below £30,000 at £28,129. Also, the lease rate, according to HSBC, is impressively below £500, although admittedly at this level you're more likely to be using outright purchase. The V70 is the most comfortable car in its class, too, and it's one of the most practical with neat features such as an under-boot floor storage area (for laptops and the like) that remains secure even if someone breaks the rear windscreen. It's also well equipped with all the standard features you'd expect in a car of this class - cruise control, trip computer, MP3 connection, alloys and anti-skid control.
