Once there, it grips hard and stays flat. Only the harsh ride and dull steering lets the side down, but there's still fun to be had playing with DNA - a system that gives the choice of Dynamic, Normal or All Weather driving modes. The latter tweaks the traction control to cope better with slippery conditions, while Dynamic brings out the beast in the Mito, sharpening throttle response and allowing overboost - not that that the flagship 157PS 1.4-litre turbo we drove needs that.
It's hot hatch fast, rocketing from 0-62mph in 8.0 seconds and onto 134mph. Boasting real mid-range thrust, you'd expect to pay a price at the pumps, but it returns 43.5mpg and emits just 153g/km.
Other 1.4 petrol choices include a 97PS non-turbo and 122PS turbo, while there's a 122PS 1.6 JTD diesel (which does 58.9mpg) and a 90PS 1.3 JTD too, which should be even more frugal and slip into a B tax band with sub-120g/km emissions.
Super low emission technology will be here before the end of the year, but all engines are pretty tax-friendly right now, with the 97PS 1.4 posting 138g/km and the 1.6 JTD emitting 126g/km.
With just 8000 cars coming to the UK, the Mito will be rarer than the Mini and should post solid residuals as a result. It should also cost little to run.
