Audi A4 2.0 TDI SE 120PS saloon: Test Drive

Date: 27 November 2008   |   Author: Tom Webster

Category: Upper medium
P11D price: £22,975
Key rival: BMW 3-series

A 120PS version of Audi's 2.0-litre diesel engine sits at the bottom of the A4 range, offering emissions of just 134g/km and economy of 55.4mpg.

But going for the lowest powered diesel doesn't mean a compromise in terms of looks or luxury. The 120PS is still available in SE trim with toys such as climate control, auto wipers and 17-inch alloys as standard. Both externally and internally there is nothing to indicate what you're lacking under the bonnet

Sadly, though, the loss of power is noticeable on the road, and the 10.7secs 0-62mph time is 1.3 seconds slower than the 143PS diesel. It also feels a little asthmatic on long hills compared to the higher-powered version.

The 143PS diesel sits in the same tax band with emissions of 139g/km, and costs only 0.9p per mile more than the 120PS's 47.4ppm. For these reasons, the bigger engine remains the logical all-round choice.

Verdict: Power cut doesn't bring enough of a drop in costs
