Replacing what is the best-selling premium small estate around, the new Audi A4 Avant has a lot to live up to.

It also has a fight on its hands with the Mercedes C-class Estate, which undermines the new Audi's claim to provide the greatest load space in this sector. With the rear seats raised, the A4 lives up to the hype with its 490-litres of cargo capacity, which is better than the BMW 3-series, Jaguar X-type and C-class.

Drop the 60:40 split-and-fold rear seats, however, and the Audi's 1430-litre load bay loses out to the Mercedes' 1500 litres. Compensation is offered with a reversible boot floor. In normal use it looks like any other carpeted boot, but flipping it over creates a slightly recessed load floor with a plastic covering that's ideal for keeping muddy boots or wet dogs from soiling the fabric.

Loose items can be held in place with the standard luggage net or optional load-securing system made up from an extendable aluminium bar and retractable belt. These are the same as used in the Audi A6 Avant and fix into aircraft style runners on either side of the boot floor.
