It's been expected for a while, but the rise of diesel popularity has finally seen Audi bite the bullet and drop an oil-burning engine into its iconic and extremely successful TT.

The new, second-generation TT has been on sale for 18 months but this new engine could be the most significant in the range. The 2.0-litre TDI diesel is the 170PS version heading for the new A4 later this year, and gives the coupe and roadster versions of the TT some serious credibility in the corporate sector.

That doesn't mean the TT hasn't been popular in the past. Last year, Audi shifted almost 2700 into the business car arena, but now it can offer the stylish sports car with a claimed 53.3 average mpg and CO2 figures that get it into the 18% benefit in kind tax bracket. RVs are also well over 50%, according to Emmox Carcost.

That's some serious appeal, especially combined with the £26,350 price of the coupe driven here, which is pretty much identical money to the 200PS 2.0-litre petrol coupe.
