In business terms, the diesel version of BMW's latest 7-series is the only one really worth talking about.

While the 5.0-litre petrol engine in the 750i is a wonderful piece of engineering, the emissions and fuel consumption of the diesel mean it will account for 85% of 7-series sales.

Those buyers will not be settling for a substandard option, though. The remarkably quiet, responsive 3.0-litre diesel has the same 245PS engine as found in the 330d we recently scored 10/10. And while the 7-series is bigger, it copes admirably.

A 0-62mph time of 7.2secs and a top speed of 151mph mean overtaking is no problem, and the car never feels underpowered. The big saloon handles fantastically, too. Body roll is almost non-existent, thanks to technological additions such as four-wheel steering and suspension settings that vary in hardness.
