BMW X3 2.0d M-sport auto: Test Drive

Date: 03 March 2008   |   Author: Tom Webster

BMW X3 has suffered a 66.1% fall in registrations
Category: Smal 4x4
Prices: £26,656-£35,647
Key rival: Land Rover Freelander

With a low ride height and plush interior carpets, BMW's small off-road brother to the X5 has always been more suited to the tarmac than the beaten track, even more so now the engines have received an extra boost.

The 2.0-litre diesel engine now produces 177PS - an increase of 27PS. This brings a burst of pace that belies the X3's size, sending it to 62mph in just 9.2 seconds for the auto.

Despite this, BMW has also managed to reduce CO2 emissions to 178g/km - bringing the X3 down to the 25% BIK banding - and increase fuel consumption to 42.2mpg.

Even with these improvements, a P11D of £33,035 and cost per mile of 44.4p means ownership comes at a high price for a vehicle that has a relatively harsh ride on the road and limited ability off it.

Verdict: The X3 is merely average and faces a serious threat from new Volvo and Audi small 4x4s
