Prices: £41,965-£51,000
Key rival: Range Rover Sport

For the MD who fancies a 6-series, but needs something practical for entertaining three burly clients down at the golf club, the BMW X6 could be just the thing.

The two smooth, responsive diesels, expected to take 85% of sales, both come in below the magic 225g/km barrier, but while the £41,965, 235PS xDrive30d does 62mph in 8.0 seconds and 34.4mpg combined, it's the fantastic 286PS xDrive35d that should win most sales. At £44,145 it's £2000 more, but hits 62mph in 6.9 seconds with economy that's just 0.4mpg worse. It is rapid, refined, and an absolute pleasure to drive.

There are also twin-turbo V8 and straight-six petrols, producing 299g/km and 262g/km respectively.

Visually, the car has a dramatic plunging rear roofline, high tail (though with a tiny rear window plus no wiper to remove grime it's lucky parking sensors are standard) and pumped-up detailing everywhere. Heads are guaranteed to be turned.

Permanent four-wheel drive, super-smooth six-speed auto with steering wheel paddles, and Dynamic Performance Control.
