BMW X6 Xdrive35d: Test Drive

Date: 03 June 2008   |   Author: Tristan Young

Category: Large 4x4
Prices: £41,965-£44,145
Key rival: Range Rove Sport

Our first UK test of the BMW X6 has revealed a few more interesting details than our first international drive of the car.

As before, the performance of the twin-turbo 3.0 diesel (badged Xdrive35d) is outstanding, but with a track test we found that the grip provided by the clever four-wheel-drive system is stunning. Dubbed Dynamic Performance Control it's standard on all models and delivers power to the rear wheel with the most grip even if the wheel on the other side of the car is slipping.

The driving experience is further helped by the optional (£2000) anti-body roll suspension. However, the optional clever steering (£800) is only really useful if you spend a lot of time manoeuvring in town.

Verdict: Little compromise on an X5 bar the lack of a fifth seat, but a vastly improved drive
