Citroen C4 Grand Picasso 1.6 VTi 120 VTR+: Test Drive

Key rival: Ford S-max

As well as slotting two new petrol engines into its facelifted C4 range, the 120 and 150PS units developed in conjunction with BMW are also heading for Citroen's C4 Picasso and Grand Picasso mini-MPV siblings.

The lower-powered 120PS version driven here is strong enough to lug the mini-MPV around, even if it's far from rapid and could certainly do with a sixth gear.

Emissions, though, are a problem. The 120PS version is a better bet because it's £1500 cheaper than the 150PS equivalent, but emissions and economy in both cases are well adrift of the diesels. RVs, however, are okay, hence the 46.1p per mile figure.

The C4 Grand Picasso is otherwise unchanged. It's one of the more attractive and well-thought-out mini-MPVs that, for the minority that worry about this sort of thing, doesn't drive quite as well as its rivals.

Verdict: Good new engine in a fine family-friendly package
